"I
would expect that in those cases it would not be agreed at the Planning Inquiry;
I mean these are precisely the issues that are taken into account, there is no
way by which government, either at local or central level determines to put it
in the countryside - I am here to protect the countryside"
- Michael Meacher MP, Minister for the Environment, speaking about incinerators on "You and Yours", BBC Radio 4 on 25th May
2000
"The government is
going to find out just how incredibly unpopular this policy of building
incinerators is going to be" - Andrew
Wedmore speaking on the same programme.
Question:
if there is 'no way', why is East Sussex County Council deciding to
'put it in the countryside' - in fact in an Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty at that?
The Mountfield Heritage Group wrote to all 44 county councillors, asking them
this question. Three weeks later, just ONE councillor (Cllr Norman Wilcox) has
replied.

New
planning protection for Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty
In
June 2000, amendments were announced to the Countryside Bill, which is currently in
the House of Lords, that would "greatly strengthen the protection given to
Areas of Oustanding Natural Beauty" by giving them the same planning
protection as National Parks.
This
is a further boost to our campaign to oppose this proposed large-scale
incinerator and waste-sorting plant at Mountfield, which is in the High Weald
area of outstanding natural beauty.
